Default Knackered wheel bearing?

...someone blowing over the top of an empty bottle. or like wind coming through a tunnel - although quite a low frequency. am i making any sense

noise coming from the rear, only when the car is in motion (not when stationary, either idling or revving).

Had something similar in my old golf and failing wheel bearing was the problem. anyone had any experience of this?

before you ask i did a search but the noise i'm hearing didn't seem to be exactly the same as that experienced by others.

could it be something like a hub bearing? anyone know how i can check before being ripped off at the stealers?

your old golf was front wheel drive, so chances are the noise is not the same thing. Does the noise change when you go round a left or right hand corner? have you just had a service where the diff oil has been changed?

If it's a wheel bearing then you can usaully tell by driving round in a circle (in a Car Park!). The noise should become louder dependant on which way you turn. Bearing noise becoming louder when under load. You can also jack up the wheel & check for play in the bearing.

Part Numbers below:

OEM Wheel Bearing
SKU: OEM-44300-S47-008

Rear Hub
SKU: OEM-42210-S2A-000

Usually hub & bearing need replacing.

Total cost approx

doesn't seem to get louder when i turn. i'm about halfway between services - last one was 54k - not sure whether they changed the diff oil.

defo not brake pads as these were all replaced at last service.

hmmm bit of a puzzler

I had a similar noise, turned out to be a worn gearbox bearing, the sound gets transmitted down the prop shaft/drive shafts hence it sounds like it's coming from the wheels. Cost me

Not just the fuel pump is it? That does tend to buzz more in very cold weather. Mines worse as its uprated, but I think the stock one does it a bit too.

Other than that it could be the diff or the box as mentioned. Does it do it with the clutch in when rolling?
