Default K&N cone filter...

I was thinking the other day...

Is there any benefit in putting a K&N cone filter into the stock airbox? Presumably this must of been tried and tested before, I've never heard any mention of it though.

Will there be any performance/noise gains or losses over both the standard filter or K&N Gen 11 setup?

Isn't that more or less what he's asking?

For any possible performance or noise gains!

Try driving the car around the block without any filter in place, the equivalent of a totally free flowing filter. That is the benchmark.

If it feels faster or sounds different there is room for improvement with a performance filter.
Form my previous experience a waste of money on both counts.
Probably better to change the standard filter more often.

I have this setup. The only advantage is that it is the last filter you would ever buy. If you think it will give a performance gain, don't worry - it won't - but at least it is not going to give you a loss either.

As mentioned, it will be the last filter you ever need to buy, so you will have a cost saving eventually on not having to purchase an air filter at every service.

Performance wise, i doubt you'll be able to notice the difference but i can only assume that cotton gauze has a better flow rate than paper, so that cant be a bad thing.

However if your planning on adding a snorkel to your stock airbox then id give K&N/JR cone and the spoon recommended airbox modification a consideration if only for the noise

Bought one myself last year after my filter was sat in a pool of oil post accident repair. Git it out of the loft last night and chucked it in the new car and put the airbox cover back in place.

No difference in noise volume, seemed to sound a little less raspy

Did not get a chance to try VTEC but last time I fitted it I felt that VTEC came in more gradual, making the car more progressive but feeling less brutal.

So, a bit unsure myself. Not always convinced by some mods so maybe the placebo effect is making me feel like it was a little bit less responsive at lower revs

I will be interested to hear peoples views on this.

I've got one and my butt dyno doesn't show any difference, not that I was expecting one. But I am planning to fit a snorkel and enlarged throttle body later to help complete the job and hopefully this will start to help then.

Its not going to be noiser or make it faster - stands to reason.

Even most col air inductions dont give more than a horsepower or two in isolation.

It is a very good filter, however.
