She HAS to drive the car first before considering it. It's a powerful RWD car with no traction control. I've come from a FWD car, and had never owned a RWD car and it IS definitely a car you need to respect. In the wet it needs to be respected and you have to adjust your driving (VTEC in corners and changing gears in corners in the wet is a )

If she can drive ok, then it is an awesome car. Good luck on the search.
It's a powerful car and there is not much prgression as you move into VTEC on the earlier ones. It's a bit like turbo cars were years ago.
If she's a good driver you will have no problems. Elsewise start off on something tamer with less power and work up as skill increases. Better a Mazda MX5 than an accident.

Sorry,

She'd be far better off with an MX-5.

If you aren't "pressing on" the car is a pussycat to drive, although it might not be the easiest daily driver for everyone.

Unpleasant things can still happen if you aren't pressing on though ie misjudge a corner and carry too much speed in, accelerate/brake on a slippy surface, hit standing water. If you don't have any experience of these things (and dealing with them) the car can still bite rather badly when you are nowhere near VTEC - this is however a good excuse to learn to improve your driving skills.

does the 2001 spin out more then say a 2003 read so many things on here. bit confused
The rear suspension on post 02 cars is softer (and more so on post 04) but you won't spin out for no reason in any model.

Wampa,

The Man & I live in Locks Heath.
She needs to drive it. This car needs a lot of respect and also it would be a shame if you bought it for her and she got scared of driving it.
Although we live in the south too, make no mistake, even without using Vtec there are plenty of opportunities (not always voluntary) for the back end to twitch . Love it! Ours wriggles its bottom every day coming out of our drive, these days with the wet weather. It was funny when it got icy too.

Take your time and make sure she will like driving it too. This is my first RWD car and oh my god it is different from anything I have ever driven! I am enjoying developping new driving skills though.

If you are buying second hand we would strongly advise buying from somebody from this site that has looked after it. research the person and find out what they done with their car. Try to find if they have abused it. Some of the people here do. ( I am going to be )

BTW, we intend to get a South Hampshire meet started in the New Year, as there are a few of us round here. But otherwise we go to the Surrey meet (20.12.05 next one).

Thanks guys for all your input.

Just dont know what to do, I love the car, She loves the car.

But it does sound Unpredictable with the back end.

Dont want my wife to get hurt!!!!!!!!!!!!

not worried about the car or money just want her to be safe.

I don't get this early cars twitchy at the rear nonsense
The only reason it's more "twitchy" is that the earlier cars responded more directly to driver inputs, so the complaint of a "twitchy" rear is usually down to one of the following

Driver driving beyond their limits
Car incorrectly setup
Rear tyres under under inflated and or have insufficent grip levels
Oh and there's a S2000 specific brand of road diesel you should look out for as well

These "twitchy" tendencies or more direct feel as we early owners like to call it were diluted on subsequent model years with various suspension changes making the car easier to handle for the mere morals that purchased them.
It must be noted however that the OEM Bridgestone tyres do take an age to get to temperature, especially in this cold wet weather, so as a consequence grip levels are compromised.
If the cars purely a fashion accessory m-way hack then I would suggest you look at fitting alternate tyres on the <MY03 16" rims.
