Don't ever start a diesel by bump starting it. That I am told is extremely dangerous - no glow plug.

I have used the S to start a number of cars both bigger and smaller in CC than the S all with no problems.

If in doubt buy a starter booster from halfords. The type of thing the AA will use when they arrive

Can't see why? I've been doing it long enough - gulp.

Some [me tractor] start without the glowplug after a couple of turns, some you'll need to be rolling down Mt Kilimanjaro.

Re: Jump starting, I thought it was the earth lead attachment that saved the ECU??

If it's connected to the battery

Connected to another earth, engine or similar [usually in the car manual]

I may be wrong!

While that would be nice in a perfect world I'm an environmentally irresponsible American so the 2.0 liter is the smallest thing at the house. Not sure of the engine size on the tractor but the Porsche is a 3.0 liter and the pickup was a 5.2 liter and they both jumped quite easily. That being said I now have a little pack that I use to jumpstart anything if I need it and the Porsche and the S have battery tenders on them. This damn cold weather and non heated garage and storage shed are killing my batteries.
then why not keep the battery topped up?

on the bike i use an Optimate - its the dogs, as it cycles the batttery charging and vital when the bike is fitted with an alarm. there are similar units for cars. sure someone will be along with a suitable product name...

Hmm,

More religion, I believe!

The battery should have enogh strength to heat the plugs, unless completely dead.

No actual danger in cold plugs. Other than the wheels tend to slide, instead of the crank cranking!

A mate has an old Daihatsu Fourtrack as a farm mule. Starter's bolloxed & it bumps surprisingly easily (in 4WD!)

If you read the last line of the quoted section I state I now have battery tenders on the S2000 and the Porsche.
