My Engine was replace 1200 miles ago by Honda, but they could not find any evidence as to what was actually wrong with it other than a knocking noise coming from the rear of the engine
The original engine number was F20C2-1070481
New engine number F20C2-0109023

So going by the numbers it would appear that the new engine fitted in my car is actually a fair bit older than the original one which hopefully is good news seeing as it seems to be the later engines that fail.

Your original engine was built in 2007

whereas you new engine was built in 2010

so your new engine is actually newer than the old one

But given the range of engine numbers I'm aware of, not sure whether that'll help.

In numeric order:-
F20C20108020 (my new engine, just failed, 21k miles on engine)
F20C21080571 (Jenson)
F20C21080681 (my old engine, 9k miles)
F20C21090153 (Snowy)
F20C20108020 built 2010
F20C21080571 built 2008
F20C21080681 built 2008
F20C21090153 built 2009

What mileage did the engine fail at ?

Mine has only 5.7K Miles and running strong. On my next service, I will make sure they will check the old oil for any debris.

mine never actually failed, it just made a knocking noise that I noticed a few days after I bought the car with 13k miles on it. I then drove it for about 7k miles and the noise never got any worse, the engine never used any oil at all and made 193 whp on the dyno so all seemed good but the noise bothered me. I waited till the end of winter and decided to get Honda to check it out (while still under warranty) where they said it shouldn't make the noise it was making and fitted a new short block. Even with the Block out of the car they could not find anything visually wrong (no crank end float, no scored bores, no swarf in the sump) so they just sent it back to Honda without ever knowing what was wrong with it.

So they carried on building F20C engines long after they stopped building cars that they could put them in Well I hope they built my latest one better then my old one

so the engine numbers are date related and not just numerically ascending e.g 000000001,000000002 etc

Chris.
My new engine was fitted in early 2009 - so this decoding of the engine numbers appears incorrect??

I've just done a little bit of research, I thought the engine serial number had a date identifier, but apparently not.

The engine numbers are sequential.

However, the first F20C2 would be:

F20C21000001

not

F20C20000001

Chris.
