Honda Swindon have had a listen, and agree it's sounding dodgy, but unconfirmed at this point. Now have a hire car, so at least mobile again.
They were impressed I'd spotted the noise, as it's quite subtle, but agree it's not normal. I'm pretty sympathetic with my cars, and the slightest knock, rattle or squeek irritates - so I know I tend to spot problem pretty early usually.

Will keep you guys updated on progress....

At what RPM does the noise start?

Still under warranty?

Get it on track and hammer the living crud out of it until it pops a rod out of the block.

New engine then, no hassle.

Can you describe the noise? I have one that sounds like static when you are driving and then apply pressure slightly to the throttle. Have to be on a quiet road to hear it and its normally at about 4k.

Mr CJ can't detect it so not sure if its just me and its nothing whatsoever.

Was there ever a definitive answer to the cause of the problem from Honda?

The noise is throughout the rev range, and worse under load. It's a sort of growl, just the engine sounding more low pitched than usual, and almost as though theres a slight exhaust blow at the engine end.

Not aware a definitive answer to the root problem. The damage to the engine in my case was that the crank shaft was breaking up, and the crank bearing appeared damaged. No idea which came first though....could have been crank causing bearing damage, or bearing causing crank damage.
They replaced the short engine last time.

Thats very much the gind/grumble that you get from the crank main journals.
Its not really something I have seen on modern cars for a long time (road cars).
Its constant and worse under load.

A metallic banging like tapping an empty bean-can thats present only when you have no load on the engine is generally the big ends (also on the crankshaft).

CJ - a thrumming but quiet percussion noise like lightly shaken marraccas under acceleration or pulling hard at small thrrottles sounds like knock/pinking.
Try a higher RON of petrol and see if its reduced is a good and easy first test...

That's exactly the noise. However I have only ever filled it with V Power/98 RON.

It's in for a service soon, is it worth mentioning?
