For what its worth, my engine failure sounds identical to Gaspode.
Rattling/knocking sound from engine. TCT replaced, no change. Oil pump replaced on recommendation of Honda technical (dealer mechanic doesn't understand why but follows honda's instructions) , no change.
Honda then decide on full engine change. Engine lead time 4 weeks. Engine actually arrives in two weeks, dealer takes further week to change engine. Honda provide Enterprise loan car whilst parts are on back order.
The whole thing is stressful, unpleasant and frustrating and i sympathise with you both.
But just i don't understand the instance that Honda UK have failed in the worst possible way and the subsequent hysteria.
I bet the engines failing at the same time are just coincidence and if wasn't for this site neither of you would even know or need to know of the other failure. They'd just get fixed in the normal due process.
I do however have particular sympathy with Gaspode and the hassle he has gone through when the dealer turned round and said they don't feel up to doing the engine replacement. Very poor show
Be grateful you've only had one engine fail. I've had 3 failures in 2 S2000s. All replaced under warranty and Honda never rang me once to apologise

10k miles and premature wear on the gear linkage .... that doesn't bode well for others!
Wonder how many times we'll hear "noisy gearboxes are a characteristic of the vehicle" when there is a good chance that some of the noises heard are in fact not characteristic at all.
In other news, Toyota are recalling a fair few cars due to the mats sticking under the accelerator and causing accidents.
Meanwhile Honda Uk, their own mechanics and Customer Services are blissfully unaware of the existence of their respective departments or what they're doing.
Back to the popcorn then

The mechanics said that they do not feel confident to do it.
When I discussed with the service manager on the 24th Sept - she was surprised to hear about this ( she was on holiday on the 21st August and knew nothing about that conversation).
I expressed that I was stuck - as their own mechanics made it clear on the first meeting with me - that I had to wait for their specialist to return from holiday some 2 weeks later to diagnose the S engine. They said they were not competent.
A summary of the above will be on the notes on the examination on 21st Aug, and the rebooking on 2nd Sept.

You're car is broken in a major way and you want the dealer mechanics to turn round and say it will all be ok. It'd be a bit like going into hospital to have your appendix out and the surgeon saying its the first one he's done and he's not too sure how it work out.....
When the second engine in my first S failed the dealer professed to not be able to work out what was wrong with it.
I now know they knew exactly what was wrong with it and they were waiting for a third engine to replace the second they trashed by not cleaning out the inlet manifold of the bits of the first engine.
But the feelings at time remain the same.
