In the end you tend to buy what you can afford, whether it's a 4x4, luxury cruiser, drop-top or coupe. The guy who buys an MX5 would probably love a Boxster or Z4, he wants a car that drives well and so he goes for the car he can afford.
IMHO the S2000 is the best trade off for looks, performance, reliability, running costs and affordability out of all the 20K+ roadsters/drop tops out there. A Boxster S with extras is gonna cost you 40K? 14K more than the S. That's a lot of money!

1. I think 'tend' is a bit strong. A discerning buyer will be a lot more sophisticated in their choice. There are quite a few owners on here who were not limited to the S in their choice, but bought it anyway.

2. Completely agree.
