+1 you can't discount the hug nut unless you hve inspected the spline
If you are going to do that you may as well regrease them and replace the hub nuts whilst you have them off

Thanks mikey K.
I have new nuts at the post office so they'll go on this weekend all being well.

Is the spline grease/rust issue (essentially) something like this here?
(...completely different car...and part but seems to be a similar result)

The noise was always more audible on my car when it was warm.

Its not really anything like the video you've posted, other than that there are splines involved.

Essentially, the driveshaft passes through the hub and the splines are there to prevent the driveshaft spinning in the hub and therefore trasmit drive. You get the noise when the clamping force on the hub nut isn't great enough and you get a very small amount of rotational movement of the driveshaft in the hub. Sometimes this is a click, other times a creak.

Thanks again for your time on this. Its appreciated.

I'd been getting the odd noise when setting off (particularly if turning at the same time) from my rear offside wheel. So last weekend I retorqued the nuts on my MY06.

I didn't bother unstaking, just undid them. The torque wrench only went up to 140, and that took the nuts slightly past their original position! A 3/4" socket, tommy bar and 4 ft pipe took them an additional 60 degrees with ease. So far (fingers crossed) the hub noise setting off is now gone.

Yet more hope that this (plus the spline greasing) gets it fixed! Thanks.

P.s. how do you pronounce 'spline'? I'm assuming to sound like 'fine' rather than sound like 'keen'.
