The ECU reset / learing idle applies to the S2000 also.

WILL PEOPLE NOT WHACK THE MAP - It scares the **** out of me that people will do this to the main sensor that governs the fuelling. At best you will damage it, at worst it will start to run lean and then you will be regretting abusing it

Dont know where this came from, but its bad practice.

It doesn't seem to make a lot of sense to me either.
If your worried about it simply unplug it unscrew it and clean it off with a paint brush or something less aggressive than a hammer

I doubt it very much. If it was intake temp related, you'd have a definite pattern when it wouldn't idle.

If it is the air filter being clogged as Paul had, then datalogging the map sensor will give a hint to that if the person logging knows that to look for. At higher rpm the map signal would show the restriction - since the ECU's using the map signal for the engine load, it self corrects for this under power. At idle, the map sensor isn't used, so the ECU doesn't really have any way to know that something like a poorly flowing air filter would be strangling the engine. So it makes a degree of sense.

Brian, is the MAP definately not used at idle? I know on Imprezas the MAF is used in the same way (to calc engine load) and although the idle is handled by the ECU (TPS / ISCV) a faulty MAF (or lambda - which is a common cause of bad idle) would really confuse the ECU. They tend to fail to a lean value on an Impreza, thus the ECU would cause the fuelling to bounce at idle.

The Honda brain must ignore the MAP signal altogether and maybe activated by a switch on the TPS?

Note references to MAP and MAF above!

Sorry to jump in on this.

How do you check the ECU for errors? I've seent he list in the FAQ.
On the MR2 it's a paperclip and count the pulses .. is there something similar for the s2k?

(and anyone in the Reading area have the workshop manual on CD?)

Yes. Been in the code for various Honda ECU's, and also spoofed sensors and all sorts. The ECU will use MAP for idle only in one circumstance - if you unplug the TPS while the engine is running so it thinks the TPS is faulty. Doesn't idle too well, but it does.

MAF on Impreza's is quite different to using MAP for load. MAF is a direct measurement for load, with MAP you need to use other factors (intake air temp etc) to calculate load.

Mine started doing this on the way home tonight. Idled at about 300rpm!

I know for a fact though, that my air filter is f*cking black cos of the Spoon intake, so I'll change that out at the weekend and hopefully I should be fine.

Ta Brian,

Been involved in impreza tuning a while, but Honda is new to me.

(I know the MAP / MAF difference too )
