They definately were talking about brands not sizes of tyre btw.
I too thought it was complete rubbish

Sizes though - wheels or tyres - seems perfectly reasonable to me that deviations from recommended should be declared

I really don't think that guy could have known what he was talking about.
If that was the case surely places like Kwik fit couldn't legally give you the option of different tyre brands without warning you that your insurance may be invalidated.
I can understand changeing sizes or wheels might be a problem but brands - that's just silly.

When one buys aftermarket parts for a car such as performance parts, there is no warning about invalidating insurance. This wouldn't be any different for tyre retailers.
It's the owner's responsibility

I've informed the insurance company of any mods I've done (strut braces and induction), just in case!!
Can't say I've informed them of different brand tyres in the past, as all tyres meet the ISO standards, I guess it would be difficult for the insurance campany to withhold payment based on different make tyres.
But who knows??!!

This seems like a restriction of trade issue too. If the insurance companies start saying everything has to be standard, then that kills off a big market in parts. What about brake pads, or even bulbs? Are you only allowed to go to your Honda dealer to buy them?
I've got a Halfords battery in mine. Should I tell the insurance company?

I think you would have an issue if the part that you have replaced with non standard is a factor in the accident.
If you fit budget tyres and then drive into someone as you didnt have the grip and they could prove the tyres that you have put on your car directly resulted in the accident I bet they could get out of paying.
