danw - Elephant.
You pay a small premium but you can take out a 10 month policy with Elephant which works for me as it's building the NCD on that car, also both of us have points removed in december so we'll change insurers then.
Take a look on confused.com, it really helps and check out Adrian Flux. You NEED to shop around in this case, 2k is too high.

Just put yourself as the named driver, my girlfriend did it for years so she could have a nice car, without the premium.
