ouch-

I got my car comprehensively insured for £730. Im 33 with 9 points !! Included in that is all my mods replaced like for like and if the worst happens the car is covered for 20k.

edit- i think postcode/profession and usage must help balance all my hard to insure stuff!

I feel i need to rant on the subject of car insurance some more.

I recently reinsured my other car. The renewal came in at £2050, £200 more than last year with no changes. A quick check on Meerkat and i found a policy for £633 with my current company!!! They are such a bunch of robbing bastards!

Try Livingstone Warman, they specialise in Japanese and Modified cars and beat Sky's (and everyone else's) premium for me. Their customer service is next to none aswell, I get a very personal service I feel. My underwriter is Markerstudy (www.markerstudy.com) but they're brokers and have many underwriters on their book.

I'm paying £750; 26 years old, 4 years NCD, 3 points.

Let us know how you get on.

Who are you with? I've never had any points, my mods are induction kit, spoiler and dash lights (if they even count as performance) and the car is worth say 6k. If the insurance companies are going to screw me then I at least want dinner and a movie first!

I work in Insurance; its Household stuff and I'm actually in IT so I'm not involved in the profitability side of things - but have good exposure to what goes on.

You'll find with most insurance companies the New Business rates are much much lower than Renewal rates, as to attract more new customers... but the profits have to come from somewhere, and that is the renewal rates.

So the best thing to do as a consumer is change insurance companies every year! On the odd occasion though, your renewal can be competitive, which I have found.

I'm with Livingstones Warman who provided the underwriter Markerstudy for me

A friend on mine as a 350Z with induction, exhaust, chipped and a full Nismo V2 body kit fitted and they barely loaded the premium at all for all that.

He's paying about the same as me with a notch less NCD but is 28 and is with Livingstones Warman/Marker Study.

Just renewed with Sky.

Off the top of my head the policy has dropped by about £10 which we weren't expecting (most seem to be going up) and as we are in the middle of a house move and didn't have internet access we decided to stick with sky and not bother shopping round.

Insurance is now £897 fully comp with all mods declared. Me and the Mrs with her using it for business use, 9 years NCB and 2 clean licences

benchmarking for another summers' use - Just went through the meerkats and got £500 if I keep it in the countryside, 580 if I keep it at home.

29
7yr ncb
6 week ban 2 years ago for sp30 (I had owned the car for 5 weeks..)
5k miles, sdp only.

That's provisional - no mods declared. I have exhaust and suspension to add on to that.

A friend of mine has a cracking rate on his Elise, in North London - which includes any mods up to 20% power increase and up to 5 trackdays per year. I'll be looking into that, too.
