Instant Karma - fined for number plate
#14
ANPR cworks in any light condition and in pretty much any weather. IIRC up to 100mph and even in heavy rain / fog it works fine.
Mis spacing ( unless you deliberately move the plate bolt fixings ) in legal font it can deal with. It's when people insist on using silly script fonts / making numbers into letters and vice versa that it flags up to dibble behind the wheel.
If your font is legal and the spacing is legal then the ANRP reads you correctly, the chances of being pulled for an incorrectly BS stamped plate are small. However if you get pulled for either of the former, they're going to notice the latter and probably check your tyres / tax / seatbelts / breath and whatever else they feel like doing.

Foreign cars don't need to pay UK VED.
Besides, who cares if ANPR can or cannot read a plate, that's not the point. The rules about fonts, size and spacing are well-known and readily available.
Having gone to the expense of getting illegally spaced plates in the first place, an expense which is entirely unnecessary, no-one is in a position to complain about getting a fine for it.
It's entirely up to you.

ANPR was developed and introduced to aid anti-terrorism so while I agree mostly with Simons post I do not agree that nobody cares .
Our security forces want it work and do not want to waste time stopping people to basically find out "who what where" !

Police in upholding law shock.
The thing about ANPR not being able to read a plate with different spacing is so stupid. But enough people seem to believe it that it's quite believable that the police do too.

I got stopped last year on the A1 by a policeman that couldn't read my plate with ANPR.
He advised me to put a bigger plate on my car, at least until after the Olympics.
I know that the ANPR at Luton's short term car park has no problems reading my plate but the one at Stansted cannot ....
