Default Installing an Alpine Head Unit...

I am going to pick up my new S on Saturday, and I decided the first thing to do when I get it is to change the head unit. So I went to my local ICE installer in Derby(Car Electronics) and spoke to one of the guys there, I have decided to have the Alpine CDA-9815RB unit. The only thing that is putting me off at the moment is, he said when the head unit is fitted a new permanent feed from the battery would have to be run to the head unit as the one which is already there is not good enough to cope with the power that this head unit needs .

So to get to the point, has anyone else been told this or is this a load of CR@P!! He said if I didn't have the power cable run through the head unit would not function properly.

Help and Advice welcome please people.

According to Alpine and the info in the manual's that they supply this is the case. I am currently running mine from the existing power cable and it works fine. But I am intending to run another feed directly from the battery.

my installation "fun" (along with Carper's concerns re my inability) are well documented - look for a thread featuring the word "grommet" for an indication as to how the power cable should be routed into the passenger footwell. The thread is only a few months old.

One of the reported problems of not running directly from the battery is a slightly lower voltage running through the 'remote on' cable. If it does not have approx 12.5v running through it the KCE-865 adaptor and amp (if fitted) may not work.

..........and a dimming display when on high power......plus no retention of settings when ignition is off (assuming no loom linking is made). Don`t forget the subsequent potential fire hazard and chuck in a void warranty from Alpine.

An hours effort and 10 quid is worth the piece of mind.

OK CC, you win i'll do it this afternoon, sound quality is supposed to diminish if the power source isn't right and definitely can't have that
