Has anyone access to an audio spectrum analyser?

It might be worth considering recording a sample of known 'good' engines at various RPM's and then recording the engines of 'suspect' engines at the same RPM intervals. It may throw-up some spikes in the analysed data.

Clearly some control would need to exercised over the conditions; same garage, microphone location, engine temp., mileages of engines. This may prove a little problematic - but it would provide some reviewable evidence.

Just contacted the dealer and Honda are coming in this afternoon to record the 'noises'.

I wonder how long the next stage will be as it is now week 3 without the car while they investigate.

Well at least HUK are doing something and you haven't been fobbed off like some other owners

Not sure what recording noises will achieve though.

Have the dealer supplied you with a loan Jizz for the forseeable future ?

LATEST UPDATE

Just had a call from the dealer stating that Honda have agreed to change the gearbox and differential to fix the transmission whine I complained about. They will then record the 'metallic ticking' noise to compare against their test car.

As long I get the car back before the end of the month, I don't mind, it gives me time to play with the CRV which has just replaced my Fiat Panda!

I refused a loan car, as the last time they gave me a Lime Green Hybrid Jazz with 'Hybrid Jazz' and flowers written on the sides - bloody embarrassing to drive, and lowered my street-cred somewhat!

I'm going to refrain from saying you had none to begin with

So they can fix the whine, but are still unclear about the engine noise

At least it's getting investigated

The last Herts meet was a CRV meet[1], you should have brought it along.

[1] Most people didn't notice so only the 2 turned up.

You say that, but swapping the cogbox & diff suggests they haven't got a clue either.

I must admit, I wondered if mine is the transfer gears & merely sounds like it's coming from the diff.

Stick your ear by the ashtray whilst you are a passenger (safer than if you're driving). If it's louder there, it'll be the Gearbox secondary input bearings...Squeak had the same problem.

Seems to be the norm; change the whole assembly rather than find out the cause

Same goes for engines. Doesn't solve the problem when there is a common issue though and there is a chance you may get another duff

Glad you are finally getting somewhere Alan. Let's see whether mine is the same next week!
