The trouble will be getting Honda to admit the lemon engine...

They never admitted how terrible the gearbox was on the Accord Type R (lasted 20-30,000 miles in some earlier cars, but lasted 100k for others)... change in design for the post model cars still had some premature failures, but not as many. I know the engine rattle here is pretty much from the first 1000miles, so its a bit more different.

Probably it has already been calculated by Honda the cost of recalling the remaining 09 engines, and tested for rattle. Millions of pounds of course, plus the embarassment. Why does it rattle, what caused this and what could be done to rectify? Probably the answer is its something catastrophic with design, and can never be tweaked or "put right" in a dealers. What a headache, I'm sure Honda want this to just go away but I think in a legal situation, it would only be the manufacturer that would be finger pointed with severe unreliabilty or a safety concern. Unlikely to be the latter. An engine specialist I'm sure would love to compare an 06 engine to an 09... what has changed / design / materials used ... did Honda test this 09 late engine design for long enough , to be sold to joe public...

There is a massive list of questions that you guys should now be snowballing to build a case, you can start with writing to ever member on here and around the world, wherever this last of the line car was made or shipped to. Cc Honda UK in with all of this.

As a prospective buyer, - can I ask, - do you suspect this affects the GT100 09 models too ?

There is nothing fundamentally different about the engine in a GT100.

GT100 is no different to any other S2000, aside from white paint, smoked wheels and a number stamped into the plaque on the kickplates

So......yes.

A GT100 was one of the first cars to fail in 09

Just to let you know that my GT100 is in at the dealers to investigate the 'rattle' and a whine from the transmission, and has been there for over two weeks! Honda technical have looked/listened to it and the latest from the dealer is that they require the sump to be put back on and a recording made so that they can compare it with???

I am waiting to see if the car will be coming back to me as the dealer, quite rightly, has said to Honda should it be returned for use and what happens if it then fails.

Life goes on!

They'll probably compare it to Bundle of Mayhem's car

Problem solved

Just got back from Honda dealer who I must say where very good and didn't make me feel like I was 'inventing' the noise. Almost feel like I've got Munchausen by proxy

Anyway, we went for a test drive and I got it to sing for the Technician. So off I trot in a Honda Jazz 1.2 which gave me back ache by the end of the day and returned at 3pm. They advised that they have applied to Honda UK for authorisation to investigate further so I now await a phone call. The service guy was helpful and said if it was declined he would find out why and advise and the same with why Grimsby Honda were declined.

I got to speak to the Technician afterwards and he said he took it for a long test drive after the service and found that the noise started at 3k and got higher the faster you went. He agreed that this wasn't an S2000 character noise at that pitch.

So it's now wait for the phone call which I've advised should be within 48hrs. Shouldn't take that long to get authorisation.

Alan with regards to trying to get a recording, we struggled to replicate the whine on the ramps at work.

I would suggest a DYNO might replicate the noise - sounds like it needs to be under load for the noise to be created - the challenge is hearing it over all the other known characteristic noises.
