Default Indy yellow repairs

Just wanted some advice..

My neighbour recently reversed into my s2000, straight into drivers door.

They where keen to just pay for the damage..

So got couple of quotes, both about the same for new door, paint door and blend in paint.

Took the Car to a large reputable company, who duly attempted the work. However after couple of days garage asked me to come and look.

Whole drivers side of car a nice dark yellow, unfortunately the rest of the car wasn't!!!. They said they had called paint manufacturer down to have a look.

Paint guy came and said put to many coats of pearl on which had made the paint to dark. They agreed to prep car and paint again.

This time mainly looks ok apart from rear side where it meets the boot, the colours are chalk and cheese!, now say only way to correct the problem is respray whole car, will cost circa 3k...

Any one out there who knows how to paint a panel and not the car...

Pearls are tricky for regular painters to blend, if the 1/4 is off colour to the boot then they have painted the entire side edge to edge, no wonder its off colour. It's their problem not yours so tell them they have to do whatever it takes to sort at their own expense.

Painting a door on its own will never ever work, even if by some miracle you got hold of the exact batch of paint used to paint your car from the factory. Every painter will paint a car differently and have different results. Specialist colour management is a rare trait for most body shop painters to have, this is why paint manufacturers offer different shades/variants of colours.

They had the right idea by painting the side, but the front wing and rear 1/4 should have been blend panels only, now they have to try and lose the blend into the bootlid, which will require blending onto the rear 1/4 again as well.

When I say blend I mean the basecoat and pearl coat only, always clearcoat entire panels when working with pearls.

Ablazejohn - silly question - are they definitely using the correct colour code? There is Y52P as mentioned above by razzele and also Y65P, which my car is. I think the former must relate to the pre-face lift models, the latter relating to the post-face lift, although I'm not 100% sure; there could even be other shades...

If you have any images of the car after the first and second attempt, that'd be really useful. I've never seen Indy/Rio Yellow Pearl resprayed on our cars, and so eager to know just how different the result can turn out to be compared to original panels.

The thing is with y52p at least it comes in 3 stages. A base, the yellow colour then the lacquer which contains the metallic fleck (i think). If there is a slightly thicker layer of lacquer it dramatically affects the 'temperature' of the colour. Then again with the same amount of paint on plastic parts it looks different compared to the metal parts.

It either needs plenty of practice parts attempted to get the correct mixture to match or a complete fresh full shoot.

My painter wrote down some guidelines and taped them to the leftover paints so that he can attempt to match, even then he said it will be difficult to get a clean match.

Id say as others have throw it back at the paint shop, if they cant do it without doing the whole car they shouldnt have attempted the job in the first place!

Razz 3 stage pearls are the ground coat (a solid colour) then the pearl coat which contains all the "fancy" parts of the colour is painted over that (a horrible piss thin coat that is difficult for average joe to apply precisely) then the clearcoat on top.

Garage adamant they have gone as far as they can, here is a picture of colours (sorry upside down..), unfortunately the difference doesn't really show up!

I can see it straight away - looks a lot more pearlescent on the quarter panel than the boot, but it does also look like the paint job is quite poor (unless I am getting a reflection of something else, but it looks like the corner which meets the boot has some kind of paint reaction causing dipping).

Do they have their own paint mixing machine?
