All of the above posts ignore that the average stopping distance at 70 is 315 feet and the average car 15 feet.
For anyone with shaky maths that works out at 21 car lengths.

except I think it's often safe to assume that in a moving line of cars, the one in front isn't capable of stopping dead in front of you.
I suppose if you startle a dawdling driver, you're always likely to get a reaction - over here, they're likely to take your number, tell their friend in the police and get you prosecuted

VW had a theory about computer-contolling cars at 30cm apart at motorway speeds. Theory was that if anything went wrong, the speed differential would result only in a minor bump.
They've gone very quiet about it recently; after that S-Klasse auto-stopping-in-the-fog video recently, I can guess why!
