Those leds are cracking aren't they Yes, the light not being in the housing properly will affect the way light is projected.

I thought just as much, but wasn't sure if 3-4 mm of potential movement would make a difference

I had a mate pop round last year with HID fitted, admittedly it was in reflector lenses but the lightoutput was shocking, she'd got the wrong bulb type and it was sat approx 1cm too far back. I reckon 50% of the light was wasted.
