Default How little oil can you get away with?

Hi All,

Checked the oil on my engine yesterday before going off to Le Mans on Weds.

To say it had not enough in is an understatement, it didnt even register on the scale..............worrying to say the least.............and worrying as to how often it has been like this under the last owners time.

My point being, how low can it go before really really causing issues(Ive now filled it up ofcourse) but Im a little worried about the long term consequences - warning for all those that check them every no and then - or think your engines hardly use any - then dont be so laisez faire - check it weekly.

How much did you have to put in to bring it up to full on the dipstick?

Not there yet, but I reckon it will be a total of 2-3 litres and maybe more

S takes 4.8L but it still worries me

Read the Tech FAQ & check it regularly. Any damage as a result of low oil levels & HUK would not give a warranty claim any merit. Best to be safe than sorry.

I check mine the morning of & the day after every long trip or blast & also once every couple of weeks of normal commute driving.

2-3+ litres to top it up?!?

I can't really see how that wouldn't cause damage to be honest.

You really should check it obsessively, weekly at least.

I have seen Honda engines need that amount and go on to lead a happy life, no one can say really, depends on how long it has been driven low, the revs and load it has been used at etc.

Would recommend topping up, running the engine and then doing an oil change to be honest.

I think they're ok so long as there's something left at the bottom. Obviously you don't want to run them like that for a long time or under high load for a long period of time. I ran out of oil in my VTS before, and it took a couple of litres to get it back up to full again. The car ran fine for years afterwards.

If it ran like that for more than a week or two then I would be more worried than if it did a day or two.
