HONDA GETS CLEVER WITH NEW VTEC

Honda Motor Company, Japan unveiled its new V6 engine featuring the latest i-VTEC technology in June, which incorporates the all-new 'Variable Cylinder Management' operation system.

The i or 'intelligent' VTEC uses all six cylinders when accelerating but reduces to three when a lower output is needed.

The benefits can be seen in the fuel consumption figures, which offer a staggering 11.6km/litre. The new Inspire model

Assuming 4.54 L to the gallon, thats 53 mpg !
Driving like a 98 year old on a motorway no doubt.

I saw a honda advert on telly this morning for IMA.

It was - "what if lights you didn't need turned themselves off to save energy"

now, I guess it must have been for this technology.

Must admit, I am really liking the brand image honda are striving for..

Given that in an S2000 or NSX you'll be driving 'hard' a lot of the time, I doubt you'll realise the extra mpg. However, for much typical driving, motorway driving etc. it'll probably be while between fillups. Guess it'll be more suited for the accord rather than the S or NSX as far as economy goes. That's not to say it'll won't work in a sporty model as long as you drive softly.

Not a new idea. Cadillac had an engine that ran on 4, 6, or 8 cylinders over 20 years ago. Unfortunately it was a poor implementation of the concept and was plagued with problems.
