Default Honda semi-synthetic oil 10/40W,

Having requested a 'Premium Grade' Semi or Fully synthetic oil for my oil change as part of my 18k service, it turned out that 'Honda Semi Synthetic 10/40w' oil was used.

Now this stuff costs

I'm suprised they haven't put fully synthetic in

IIRC Burnie now uses Semi-synth and says that his car isn't as thirsty on oil

Given the Honda recommended grade for the S is a 10W30, not a 10W40, all the more curious!

I recently bought some Redline 10W30 - see the For sale and wanted board. According the US guys top notch oil - fuly synthetic and

Well, its the oil Southern Counties used for my service ..

In the meantime (for topping up purposes), what are people's views on using Castrol Magnatec Semi Synth ???

Its 10/40W, and readily available from the likes of Halford's etc...I am guessing that the Honda stuff is just re-badged oil..(though I dont know exactly what..)

I envisage it becoming it bit of a pain in the a**e having to buy little 1l bottles from Honda whenever I require oil.!!

Amen to that, I ended up having to drive 30 miles to the local (not really but the only one I trusted) dealer to get the Castrol SLX synth they used in my S2000 and was only available in 1 litre bottles. Quite a pain in the arse when your S is as oil thirsty as mine was!!

hmmm,
I may have to buy a few of these ickle 1l bottles from Honda for top ups then..

Though, does anybody know whether it would indeed be okay to use another oil for top ups (ie. Castrol magnatec) ?

Does anybody know whether the Honda stuff is 're-badged' main brand stuff, put in smaller bottles, and sold for a hefty premium !??

I go to Southern Counties Honda, it is Shell Helix, so go down yr local Shell petrol station and get a quart or two of Helix Plus.(Ultra is a vail, but don't mix the two).

Great debate on wot oil to use etc, IMHO just change the oil frequenlty @4500miles. I don't bother with fully synth or stuff like that, it's for race cars which need a good oil to run at extreme temperatures for long periods, not for a whizz to the shops and back.

Thanks Gazzer for the reply.

So its quite amusing that the bottle the receptionist showed me (ie the 'Honda Semi Synth' Engine oil) is indeed rebadged other stuff!

Did one of the technicians reveal this fact to you ?

They did. I took great pains to decide on whether I should take my own oil, ie Mobil 1 etc etc, but spoke to a load of car buffs about oil and said it ain't required, more good is done to the engine by changing the oil more frequently than using expensive stuff.

So I top off with good ole Shell Plus from the petrol station , so I know the same stuff is used again.

That is unless Scov comes on-line and tells me otherwise................................
