Default Honda Dealers, Standard Oil?

i'm trying to guage what oil my local honda dealer will have filled my car with.

The monkey at the dealer told me that 'it's probably a 10W/40, mate...'

I'm assuming a semi-synth blend (as this seems to be the norm).

Is this correct or do they use a specific viscosity for the S (ie - 5W/40)?

Cheers,

Ben

Yep, semi synth is the norm for dealers.

If you look in the manual there is some variation to what you can use.

Its a very hot topic oil, I use 5W40 fully synth Motul V300.

I personally wouldnt use a 0W or a 10W but each to their own!

interestingly i was at the stealers in Colndale yesterday as passed by and had similar question.

In the parts dept they told me they only sell one type of oil which i think from recollection is 10w/40. Tho when they fill up in the workshop this is a mixture which they buy in bulk and dont sell! he thinks its at 10w/30 as reccomended in book. But you cant buy it -stoopid huh!

I've searched small shops, texaco, bp halfords and japarts and not found it.

so ended up buying something slightly different (which is on the car seat to be filled before i leave work) and i think its a 10w/40 with API etc etc...

not sure this helps tho.

I believe my local dealer uses 10/40. Had our BMW serviced there and they put 10/40 in this as well-semi synthetic apparently. Once the car had done a few 1000miles I changed to Mobil 1 0-40 fully synth and will use this in the S once its had its first service and it no longer needs the running in additive. I personally think the 10/40 semi synth is going to be fine, especially if you change the oil regularly. In my motorbikes I use mineral oils as I change it every 3-4000 miles so I believe their will be no advantage in using a synthetic oil which is a lot more expensive.

My S had it's first service on 28th September and the oil used was Shell Helix Plus 10w/40. Geoff.

Well according to Honda UK, the right oil is 0W-30 . I'll tell you why, I took some Mobil One 0W-40 to my local dealership and shock horror, they wouldn't use it.

They said it could invalidate my warranty if I ever had to make an engine related problem claim.

So I thought bollox to this use your Castrol Longtec stuff 0W-30, trust me, I saw the chart.

I have posted this before but I'll do it again.

1) Castrols own recommendation for the S2000 is GTX Magnatec for modern engines. (This is a semi synth 10W40) Check their web site.
2) Honda UK have agreed with this on at least one occoasion when asked by me.
3) It's almost immpossible to buy 10W30 in the UK except from specialists.
4) My local Honda dealer uses Esso semi Synth 10w40 but only because the fully synthetic Ultron is too expensive. (Read - they can't sell it to Jazz drivers.)
5) Each Honda dealer is free to choose oil as Honda UK do not have an agreement with any particular oil company in the UK currently AFAIK. However 15 months ago all Honda's seemed to come with a little leaflet recommending Castrol lubes from new.
6) Halfords will still tell you to use a mineral 10W40 if you ask them.
7) Castrol Longlife oils were specifically developed between Castrol and VAG for Audi's and Volkswagens operated on the variable service interval mode. This can extend the time between oil changes to 20,000 miles. Again AFAIK this is only endorsed by VAG and then only for certain engines. Honda do not endorse this so you don't get any benefit from longlife oil you just pay more as you still have to change it after 9000 miles. It is however fully synthetic and some people would contend this means it's better. However I'd use Castrol RS if I was going to use anything.

So I would say you can use any semi or fully synthetic at or around the 10W40 mark as long as you get one that meets the SAE and API classifications recomended for the S2000
