Euan, could you please give me more details on your dads Rav 4 ? I must say that i like the look of those more than the CRV. Geoff.
Likes - utterly reliable (no faults in 60k miles), cheap to service, great dealer, 44 mpg (varied driving), very low opening rear door which makes it easy for the dogs, rear seats removable to leave bog load space.
Dislikes - seat squab a bit short, interior a bit utilitarian (solid, but plastic)
I really enjoy driving it - surprisingly good handling for a 4WD, turbo diesel engine very punchy.
The CRV I tried was the petrol one - it had the worst torque steer I have ever encountered, and the handbrake was very annoyingly placed in the central dash - just out of comfortable reach when you are in stop start traffic It didn't handle as well as the RAV4 either, although it is larger, and the interior is more pleasant. There is a new RAV out very soon, so deffo worth a look. New Vitara supposed to be a large improvement on old version too. IIRC though, the best in class is still meant to be the Nissan X-Trail.

I had one as a courtesy car and hated it - my dad's RAV4 is smaller, but for a 4x4 drives much better.
I hated driving the RAV4 but I like the CRV.

When I was looking at reviews the general consensus was.
CR-V - Best Interior, Best Engine, Best Looking
X-Trail - Best off-road
Rav 4 - Best On Road (most car like)
Hyundi thing - Best price!!!
