Default Honda Car Warranty/Honda Part Warranty Confusion

Just got off the phone with a dealer regarding my timing chain tensioner that was changed under the car warranty last year. Now the car is out of warranty and I think the TCT is on the way out again, I enquired about getting it replaced under the Honda 1 year part warranty.

I was told that when the part was fitted it was covered by the car warranty and as such, this would run out after the cars warranty ran out and would not be covered by the part warranty.

This sounds very strange to me as you could get into the situation where you have a part replaced with 1 month to go and after the month you have no warranty.

Can anyone clear this up?

What you have been told is correct.

If a part is replaced whilst the car is under manufacturers warranty, the warranty on that part expires when the manufacturers warranty expires.
This is if the part has been fitted when the car is 6 months or 30 months old.

So why the existence of a part warranty at all?

Yeah, that kinda sucks.

I guess the part warranty is to cover anything you have done after your car is out of warranty.

You only get the parts warranty if you actually pay for the part - if its fitted free during the maker's warranty the maker's warranty is all you get.

However if you have the history of the problem with the part previously you can push them to handle it as an ongoing issue. Basically you're pushing them to repair it again since they didn't repair it properly first time around.
