Default Holy shit Captain....I've lost directional control

.......I allowed my car to roll back down my drive without the engine running.....it was on full lock....as I roll down the drive I am twirling the steering wheel and virtually nothing is happening????

I figure it must be the power steering system not working because as soon as I fire it up....the steering comes back

I take it that there is no direct link between the steering wheel and the steering rack and the electrical P/S system is a 100% interface?

There is a direct link - its currently illegal for there not to be direct mechanical link in Europe at the moment, which apparently is why we do not yet have fly-by-wire steering.

I'm not sure how the electrical assistance works though - are there motors instead of the usual hydraulics ?

You must have had some steering, albeit heavy, with the engine off - sounds a bit to me.

I have run the car down a small hill without the engine - there is very definately a direct link from s/wheel to front wheels and without the assistance the steering is bloody heavy - there was absolutely no way I could 'twirl the wheel' !

Definately a direct link as spent most of this weekend under LB's hood hardwiring some devices in.

If you do not have the air box in then the steering rack and the steering column can be clearly seen

Has anyone had the power assistance fail on them ?

(seeing as it's electric, I guess it's not unheard of)
