Default Holes above rear number plate

Hi

I've just noticed there are a couple of rectangular holes above the rear number plate on my S. I think they should house lights, but I'm not sure. Please could someone clarify? They're directly above the plate looking down so if there was a light then it would shine downwards.

I can't think why I haven't noticed these before which leads me to believe there was something filling the holes and maybe during a service they were taken out and not replaced.

Many thanks for help, as always.

Richard

Tried turning your lights on to see if they are still there?

Early versions had the holes as you say.

AFAIK their was two types of light assemblies used, I assumed the same as the OP, so looked into ordering the ones K3Nguru has shown, but once I actually turned the lights on, the licence plate was illuminated. From what I found, much more primitive looking assembly was used and seems to be on early models, I'll try and find a pic.

I noticed exactly the same thing last weekend whilst under the rear of the car (MY02). I thought I was going mad as never noticed it before. So should pre-facelift have the holes or light fittings? Seems a bit of a water trap otherwise.

MY2000 S2000's have a circular rear numberplate light assembly. I clean mine out annually as they have a hole in them which collects water and dirt (I assume the hole is there as the bulbs get rather hot).

Could this assemble have fallen out? I can't think when it could have disappeared other than MOT, which seems unlikely.

The assembly on my MY00 was rather recessed, didn't notice it until I got under and put my hand up the feel it. So initial expectation is that it's higher up than thought and not fallen out. If it has though the newer design assembly is all over ebay atm.

Early JDM models have similar assembly to facelifts but with only one bulb. Other pre-facelift cars have those PIA domes .
