High pitched whine
After five years of trouble free ownership could this be my first major problem. The better half drove the car to Manchester and arrived last night complaining that the car had a high pitched whine on the way back.
Took it out today and it certainly is whining, just when on the throttle, not at high revs and not when changing down the gears. Happens in all gears on balanced throttle, not when accelerating particularly ie, 2500 revs in sixth at 40mph to test it and very high pitched whine. Gets higher with revs. Can't really tell where it is coming from just seems to be there taking over the cabin.
Took to Crown Garage (Soham) to see if they could have a look and they can't till tomorrow but the salesman there is pretty clued up, (I'll let him off driving a Boxster) and he mentioned maybe the diff.
What does anyone think, if it is the diff this is going to be expensive I suppose?

i get this, it's the missus. boot her out and it'll be fine.
seriously is it proportional to speed or does it change when you change gear (proportional to engine revs)?
could be a belt or a bearing somewhere, could be the bearing on the gearbox mainshaft, i'd say if it were diff it wouldn't go away?

If at steady throttle at 2500rpm in third at 30mph do not notice it, hard throttle and whine increases with revs/speed, immediately back off throttle at 40mph still in third and whine goes away.
Just checked my service sheets and am now worried. The service sheets for the 72000mile service and 63000mile service say at the top of them "Euro Service - 9000 mile schedule" and state on them that the diff fluid be changed on the S2000 at the 54000 mile service. The 54000 mile service sheet says at the top of it "Euro Service - Basic Schedule" and states that the diff fluid should be changed at 75000, and therefore was not done as part of the 54000 mile service. I checked the 27000 service sheet and it was done then. Looks like they may have skipped this from the 54000 mile service.
Could be interesting chat with them tomorrow.

Could be whine from the Airbox/Induction or something related (Piping etc)..
I would suggest checking that all piping is firmly secured
I don't think that needs an explanation its quite self explanatory if you think about it

jbeee does it whine on the throttle even when the car is not under load? That would rule out anything engine/induction wise and put it down to drivetrain I'd have thought?
My bet would be the diff or gearbox, probably more the diff. I've had a wheel bearing go as mentioned previously and its not really a whining sound, more a chirping for a while followed by a low groan all the time.
If it is the diff, don't fret! I picked a low milage one up for £180 and fitted it in around 2 hours!

It whines only under load so must assume drivetrain. If the diff oil has not been changed at the 54000 service is it worth getting that done first prior to looking into it further?

If it is the diff and its starting to whine already then I doubt a change of oil would do much, though its quite cheap so it could be worth a try.
It could be that its just low and thats whats making the whine?
If you jack the rear of the car up and put it in 1st gear with the handbrake off, do the wheels spin opposite directions when you spin them by hand? That would check that the diff is still working....
Honestly dont panic if it is the diff though mate. They arent expensive and its really not too hard to fit.
Plus you would still be able to sell yours to someone who wanted to rebuild one with a new LSD etc.
