[B]Have received a summons to appear in court for speeding. Not even sure how fast i was doing. When the ticket came through, thought they were just going to issue a ticket and give me 3 points, unfortunately they have asked me to appear in court as it cannot be solved by a fixed penalty fine. Does that mean it's very serious?

I don't do motoring stuff myself, but I know a bit about the law relating to it and can always ask specific questions of one of the specialist guys I work with who do do that kind of stuff.

No problem, Chris - always happy to help out, if I can. If I can't, Craig will probably be able to - non-contentious stuff is more his side than mine, but I'll see whether I can help

The NIP has been around for yonks there's nothing new about it. It's required for speeding and several other offences. It's actually a simple statement " The facts will be reported to the Chief Constable for consideration of the question of prosecuting you for exceeding the speed limit" It can be given verbally at the time by the officer in which case that should be recorded in his pocket book and would be sufficient in itself. It's more usual for it to be served by post within 14 days of the offence. If neither of these two things is done within that time scale, then the prosecution cannot proceed further.
