Help - Installing stereo.. sure this isn't normal

As long as the guy hasn't modified the existing loom (before the ISO connector) you should be ok. It's always easier to just buy an adaptor than modify the wiring, but some people do insist upoin doing that to save a few quid.
Hopefully there's nothing to worry about and you can just pull off all that shite and plug an adaptor on to the ISO.

Those blue plastic things look like connectors that allow you to connect a wire to an existing wire without cutting it.
I suspect that what you will find you need to do is
1) remove insulating tape
2) remove the blue connectors (there should be a flip cap and then a metal crimp underneath).
3) you should then have little defects in the existing loom where 2) attached (I would put some tape on these to stop them shorting)
4) as said above get a Honda-ISO connector from Hellfrauds
5)have fun trying to cram the radio back into the hole (!) as it's tight (I added a subwoofer last weekend)
It should be that easy unless the previous person bodged it and cut off the original connector.

Update, I managed to get this fitted by Audio Designs in Kingston. (thanks for the referal).
The previous owner had completely hacked the original loom and all the contacts needed to be rewired. Definately not a job for an amateur.
They also supplied the Alpine lead at a very competive price so I'm a happy customer.
Sounds great now. Can't believe what a difference a head unit makes!

PL can you link me to your install pics please
I've decide I might need to put the amp in where the spare wheel is coming out.
