My own 2 penneth is to remove the rad shield, ran my S now for 2 mths no bogging at all. Even better add in a filter that can breathe and its goes better too. Bluenomad did the same ..he gets no traffic bogging "rooing" now
The Rad shield has been and Is the root of a lot of mixed emotions as to whether is should be removed or kept on.
Ive recently modded the air box and have been playing with the car with and without ..the difference putting the shiled back in is stunning, you dont realise how air the shiled restricts until you change the filter ect... It only takes 10 mins to re fit it if you don't think you see any improvement
The best thing is its a Free Mod

so you are saying remove the trim along the top of the rad and that improves the kangarooing? i need to look under the bonnet to visualise what you mean. if its just a case of undoing some trim clips its worth a try.

Yep the plastic shield that is inbetwen the bumper and the slam panel the Rad sits behind that. 8-10 Screws with 4 of them being buggers to get to as the plate is bent back on its self ( you will see what I mean)

Take it you know how the internals of it work? The particular sensor is responsible for the fuelling on WOT or VTEC so not something you want to be failing (can run lean) Ive monitored mine using my wideband and its giving out odd voltages which are getting worse - so I bought a new one.
On 99/00 Impreza's the MAF (not MAF) sensor is considdered a service part and some only last a year. Its a known fault on these cars too.
But what do I know
Worth checking the 3 wores into it arent loose too.

Lower, the difference in kick you feel will probably just be due to ambinets. Cold air is more dense so compared to the same volume of warm air, you get more combustion, therefore more power.
Nottm - the ECu takes a lot of factors into account for the fuelling, MAP / Lambda / AIT / Throttle pos etc.
It compensates fuelling in different temps using the Air Intake Temp Sensor.

Also, a tube of choke cleaner down its gizzard cleans the carbonised oil out from the butterfly and slow-running air valve, etc. Has an amaaaaaazing effect on response/smoothness, etc.
