That has to be a very interesting "stereo" experience.
I'd love to hear how "Brown Eyed Girl" sounds for instance.

If I want a more serious stereo experience while sitting in a car park I can fade them out

True. Good stereo belongs at home.
But with many songs you won't hear the lyrics. Just the bass line.
If 2 smaller speakers or having mono at the rear is doable. Then I can see the benefit
The Alpine imprint unit and seperate amp is what I would do.
Simon's setup is very impressive and it's door speakers only

Alternatively you can cut circular holes yourself near the vents and install speakers there, in the bottom right in Mikeys 2nd pic.
I have some which were installed 3 years and they have been great, some say they spoil the sound stage but i think they help greatly with sound quality esp when the top is down, i did however replace the headunit+front speakers+install 2 rears.

The imprint set up is tempting but expensive.
Ultimately it is an imperfect place for good sound and will always be a compromise as a convertibles passenger space characteristics vary.
How does the imprint set up deal with an open roof?
My headrest speakers enable me to hear spoken word and lyrics on the move when I have no expectation of hearing a sound stage - and the roof is always down
