You'll get better sound of decent components, unless you like mono from behind you?

I have a set in mine similar to the ones in photo, whilst they will never beat a good set up for quallity of sound they are good at bringing out the mid range when the roof is down, if you find it difficult to hear whats being said on the radio when the roof is down and dont want to turn the radio up too loud then these are a good compromise, i have them wired to the rear speaker output and simply add more bias to rear speakers when the roof is down

How do you judge sound quality? Sitting in the car top up and engine off?

In the real world you want to hear music/radio when on the move and that is where the headrest speakers score.
I have an amp, Alpine HU and good quality door speakers.
I also have good quality 4" headrest speakers which when turned down as a fill in don't effect the stereo image but do add a lot of clarity in an open car and top down I can hear the radio more clearly without resorting to high volume.

Was thinking of adding these to, would prefer the OEM ones though.
Theres a set on ebay at the moment:

Bit pricey though!

You have two speakers in the headrest, or have you wired both left and right channels to them, making a "combined mono" sound?

Just out of interest

I have these. They came with the new seats I replaced mine with.

They look good and perform fairly well but are not the greatest sound quality.

They were apparently an option for around £450! That is more than I paid for the seats in total with these added.

I had an upgraded head unit and door speakers, and these.

As good a sound as you are likely to get in a soft top.

Don't you just hear (predominantly) the right hand channel with that setup though?

This is my biggest problem/question with the headrest speakers.

its not as bad as you might think, yes there is a slight bias. if you are a bit handy i would think the ultimate is run the big roll hoop speakers wired for mono and install a left and right tweeter in each roll hoop plate they should just fit at the lower end of the plate

I reckon it'd be better (and cheaper) to install tweeters in the A-pillars, with a proper time-alignment probably giving the best of both worlds.

The whole "sound from behind you" is an anathema to me (for stereo at least). My home cinema system has all sorts of different processng modes, including what's called "Party surround" where the stereo signal is sent to both the front and the rear speakers, and a combined mono is sent to the centre. It's a really odd experience, even when sat in the middle of the two rear speakers. Offset to one side is just horrid. Proper surround processing, such as "Dobly" PLII is actually pretty good.

Probably best is a pair of bluetooth headphones
