I agree it isn't his responsibility.

BUT when we did the SC GB we made sure the duty and vat was prepaid so it would fly through customs and we'd not get stung later.

I don't know how the US seller did it, but he did.

I didnt specifically mention VAT so I guess thats my fault, but you would have thought he would have mentioned that I may be charged VAT especially after the Lloyd issue.
A pretty huge assumption to make, especially after the previous situation kind of proves HTG doesn't know about VAT.

It's not Hard Top Guys problem. If you want to know more about why then Google the word INCOTERMS.

You will see that the best HTG can do from his end is to ship it fully insured and duty paid to you. (DDP) He can't be responsible for VAT applied by HMRC. There is no INCOTERM to cover it so he can specify a shipping method that means he picks up the cost. In theory it could be done and some big companies who have muscle with their carrier do it but for a smaller operation using Fed-Ex or UPS they will be given a range of standard options the most complete of which is DDP.

You are lucky as most people who do mail order from overseas use the FOB Incoterm. This basically means that as soon as it's on the boat it's your problem.

Just feel that he should have mentioned it, especially as I asked for an All Inc price and also due to the issues he has had in the past.
Can't agree there - Its a UK rule, not a US one - its your responsibility to know that.

Its not like the money is going to him.

When I buy smaller items from the US I always insist that they are sent USPS (US Postal Services). It may take a little longer and may be a little cheaper .......

This means that they get delivered in the UK by the Royal Mail and more often than not I don't get charged any vat/import duty. More importantly, if you do get charged VAT etc you don't get charged the rip-off handling fee.
