Reaching the filter wasn't the problem, it was having enough room to remove it. It could not be removed by hand. This is of course only in my limited experience.
It'd be a lot easier if you removed the heat shield.

Not tried this on the S myself but worked a treat on all the other cars I've worked on.

I never have, and have always had the sticky moments when the sump plug finally drops

its always good practice to remove filler bungs before removing drain bungs because if youve drained all the oil then you cant get the filler bung out your stuffed. would only be a problem with gearboxes and axles as engine filler bungs usually very easy. still good practice to make sure you can undo it first though!
