Reaching the filter wasn't the problem, it was having enough room to remove it. It could not be removed by hand. This is of course only in my limited experience.
Wasn't too hard to get my chain filter wrench on there. Without having a 4-point lift, I would think it'd be more difficult from underneath.

It'd be a lot easier if you removed the heat shield.

Ah! Didn't think to remove the heatshield. Once the car was jacked up and on stands it was dead easy from underneath.

you know when you undo the sumb bolt does it sprat out at reasonable pressure or does it pour out like a slow tap?
One tip here is to remove the sump plug with the oil filler cap still in place.
This stops air rushing in at the top and allowing the oil to drop out, giving you just enough time to get your fingers out of the way of the warm/hot oil and whisking the plug away to safety.
you can then go ahead and remove the filler cap and let the oil flow freely.

Not tried this on the S myself but worked a treat on all the other cars I've worked on.

it does sound promising, but I cannot for the life of me think why you would ever remove the oil filler cap before the sump plug.....

I never have, and have always had the sticky moments when the sump plug finally drops

its always good practice to remove filler bungs before removing drain bungs because if youve drained all the oil then you cant get the filler bung out your stuffed. would only be a problem with gearboxes and axles as engine filler bungs usually very easy. still good practice to make sure you can undo it first though!
