Only do the filter hand tight and try to fit the filter when the engine has cooled down so filter and engine are aprox same temp.
Once helped a guy working on the next hire ramp, he could not get the filter off so I showed him the old screwdriver through the filter body trick, only trouble was it just ripped the case of and left the flange still on the engine. I had to drive home get my drill and chain drill the steel flange of the engine block, it finaly came off, I cleaned everything up and fitted the new filter for him hand tight only he passes me the fiter wrench and says "I always tighten it with a wrench"
A simple 30 mins oil change took me 5 hours in total.
so Just hard tight with hands with filter and engine similar temp

The problem you had was caused by two issue!
1) Your mate not torquing the filter up correctly and over tightening it!
2) You using the wrong technique to take an oil filter off!
It's been said a few times but it is important
NOT INSTALLING THE OIL FILTER CORRECTLY RISKS TORCHING YOUR CAR!
This is fact! Just do a search or PM Burnie

The axle stand is in the proper place for jacking, the jack is further up on the sill.
I never understand why they don't give you two points to make it easier to jack up and put axle stands at the side, but the only way you can do it properly is to use the centre front jacking point and then put the axle stands in. Which is what I always do.

a jacking point on the sill & a body carrier point further in.
Mind you, they're so rigid these days, it barely matters.

I am happy with hand tightening the filter but what are you fastening the torque wrench to? I have never seen a fitting tool and most of the removal tools I have seen mark the outer casing and I would be worried of the case splitting under pressure from the marks.
