Default Funny humming at idle with air box lid removed...

I noticed the other day when pulling into my garage an odd humming/whistling noise that is kind of hard to describe. It is really loud in a confined space but not so bad in the open. That said it is obvious with the bonnet closed to a passerby at some traffic lights for example.

I tracked it down to induction noise and it disappears with the air box lid back on.

It only happens at idle and when the car is warmed up. I tried changing to a K&N to see if that helped but the noise is still there. I am almost 100% certain that the car didn't do it when I first took the air box cover off 3-4 months ago.

Has anyone got any suggestions as to what may be causing it or is it normal?

It's been the subject of many posts similar to yours in the past!

It's perfectly normal.

Mine makes exactly the same noise with the lid off. Loud enough to wake the Mrs when I'm working late.

Yep, it's a normal noise if the lid is off.

I wonder what it is though???

You're hearing purely more induction noise from having the lid off...

It's the fuel pump apparently.

From the front of the car?! I thought the fuel pump was located in the petrol tank?!
