Default Fuel Warning Light

Hi,

I have a question about the fuel warning light. So far the closest I've come to empty is 1 bar left on the fuel gauge, but the warning light didn't come on.

I've done a search and it seems that the light comes on for some people at about 3 bars, but for others it can drop to nothing before they get a warning.

My concern is that when I first turn on the ignition and the dash lights up like a Christmas tree, the fuel warning light still doesn't come on. I don't whether this is normal and I've just got a car where it really has to be empty before there is a warning, or whether there is a problem with the display.

Could someone please let me know whether their fuel warning light comes on when they first start the ignition?

Thanks, Rich.......

If the fuel's low enough, then yes. I park on a slope, so that fools the sensor so I've seen the light quite a few times. I don't think much of the gauge though, so I don't tend to run the tnak that low if I can help it.

not sure if mine comes on or not, I did have the light come on at 3 bars and finally crawled into a Shell station with 1 bar, light on

she took 43.43 litres exactly so by my reckoning I was not far from a flameout

Thing is my fuel guage goes up and down like a yoyo in response to how hard I am driving the car, I get 3 bars, tippy toe around and it goes up to 4
??

Paul, isn't the tank 50 litres? I was sure I'd read somewhere that it is? If that's the case, you had a fair safety buffer before the engine conked out.

EDIT: Just found this old thread. You will see that Marc managed to get 50.32 litres into his tank! It's therefore fair to assume that the tank is (notionally) 50 litres.

Same here - fuel gauge is a bit temperamental !!

I go by the mileage - as soon as it nears 200, time for Optimax !!

Having joined a couple of these threads before, I have taken the advice given:
1) The fuel gauge is very approximate.
2) Ditto the warning light.
3) I worry around 230 miles per tank; my light is normally on by then.
4) I panic above 250 miles per tank; my light s always on by then.
It seems to work, as I have never run out of petrol!
I'll check this afternoon if my light come on when I turn on the ignition; could be you have a fault.
Hope tha helps,

Don't think the low fuel light comes on when you turn the key.
Supposed to appear at about 8L - but as Brian says - gauge is very approximate - better working on mileage (unless you have a 10L can in the boot )

I normally try to keep the tank at least 1/2 full. If I am on a long journey, I normally do the same as Bharat and if I near 200 miles stop at the next available Optimax for a top up.

Use trip meter B as a fuel gauge is my advice too. Works for me!

Like Paul says, 250 miles is usually "WTF is a SUL garage time!"
