So the gauge doesn't actualy give you the level of fuel in the tank?

Russ.
No, it's adaptive.

I managed 38 I think it was on a recent Jock meet. I had a succession of closed/abandoned/non-existant garages that TomTom lead me to (4 in total), each 3-4 miles apart, before trying to make it back to Stirling Services (7m from the last garage).

I put 49 litres in

It's that 39th mile that's the killer though, eh Graham?

If sitting in a jam why not switch off to save fuel?
i would've if it was a complete stand still and probably would have literally parked up on the spot with hazard lights on, but it was moving, albeit very slowly??

before i turned in fully to the junction i had thought about reversing out but it was too dangerous to do so and with paving in the middle, had no choice but to brave on.

That one was odd - it was only about 15 miles to the garage from the hotel as I recall? Light wasn't on when we parked up the night before but came on with the ignition in the morning.

At Donington for the October track day my fuel light came on when we went out for our final session, on the track. We finished the lap gently, went straight to the circuit garage and discovered it had closed, so decided to drive to East Midlands Airport which is about 5 miles away. Didn't make it! Conked out about 1/4 mile from the petrol station. I reckon therefore I managed about 6 miles from the light coming on to the engine stopping. Quite a shocker!

i find that when the fuel hits 2 bars, if i start the car in the morning the fuel light is on.

I think your good for 20 miles or your average MPG. I don't push it as the S has a small tank anyway
