Default Fuel light on...in traffic jam

Yesterday was suppose to pick up a friend from North Greenwich and there was an accident on the A2 and the Canterbury bound side was closed off from the Blackfen slip road all the way back to Blackwall Tunnel. As i was heading to North Greenwich i had 4 bars of petrol, i thought to myself it'll be fine 4 bars would last me easily, until i came to Blackwall Tunnel and turned off towards the cinema... i was stuck right in the middle of a massive traffic jam and my 4 bars became 2 bars and after 5 minutes stuck between a roundabout and a set of traffic lights the fuel light came on..sitting on 0-1 bar!!!

At this point i was s"""ing myself as i couldn't get to the Sainsbury petrol station literally 2 minutes away as i was stuck in this jam. I finally managed to get to the petrol station somehow and the bars went back up by 2, i count myself as lucky...

So the question is how much grace is given from when the fuel light comes on till you really run out of petrol???

Well you are good for 30-35 miles but I haven't risked it much beyond that to be honest.

You should have around 5 litres to go so basically you have a gallon or so of fuel left from when the light comes on.

on an 04 there is always AT LEAST 5l left. There's often as much as 10l left. It's a 50l tank. I reckon on a guaranteed non hooning 40 miles from the light coming on.

Remember that at low levels the gauge calculates your fuel usage and adjusts the gauge accordingly.

Hence you can start the car on 0 bars and it can go back upto 3 with steady driving.

I find it quite accurate knowing that.

So the gauge doesn't actualy give you the level of fuel in the tank?

If sitting in a jam why not switch off to save fuel?
