Default Fuel Light

Was driving back on the M25 last night, and literally lost 3 bars off my fuel gauge in 10 mins driving at a constant speed of about 70mph. The engine light came on with 1 bar left.....roughly how much more motorway driving do I have? Also it then went to no bars and fuel light.....how many roughly now?!

By engine light, I presume you actually mean fuel light?

As for the amount left - pick a number, divide by 2, add 5, say "abracadabra" and make up another number.

It's notoriously unreliable Set your trip to 0 at next fill up. At 200-220 or so, depending on how you've been driving, start looking for a petrol station

If you get to 255, don't stop the engine, as it probably won't restart

haha....very good. It was a shock how quickly it went from 3 bars to none! But then from half to losing a few bars took ages!

I will write down your equation on working out how much you have left......

Mine did this earlier, started it up, just over halfway shot down to 3bars and the petrol light came on. Restarted the engine and it went back over half

The gauges in both my S2000s were hopeless, but even more so in the 04.

Not long after I got it, the fuel light came on whilst on the M6 toll road. The gauge had dropped from around 25% left down to showing as being almost empty in less than 10 miles.

I'd passed the only services on the toll road so it was a case of cross your fingers and hope. I did about 25 miles before I got to a garage, thinking it was going to die on me at any moment. In the event, when I filled it up, it would still only take 45 litres - it had 5 litres or so left in the tank, so it must have come on when it got down to about 10 litres left!

That's 20% of the tank's capacity FFS! It's VERY conservative. So, when the light comes on, I'd estiimate you probably have 30-40 miles left in it if you take it easy.

(I was never sufficiently confident to put that to the test again though! )

Nope - pretty certain it's 50 litres. I've put more than 45 litres in on a number of occasions.

50 litres - 13.2 US gal

When the light comes one it *usually* means about a gallon left (on most cars).

When you get the pump out you can see the petrol measuring device, it's like a ballcock in your toilet .. it really is sh*te.
