If you drive it hard it goes down much quicker. Then cruise on a motorway and it goes back up. I think it is more of a range indicator than a fuel level guage

How hard can it be to make a fuel gauge that's even slightly accurate???
Used to be very good on my 99.

Obviously parked up on slopes would confuse for a short time & there was some debate on whether it was predictive (i.e. flooring it would reset itself to thinking you'd be empty in no time)

Did you freewheel downhill for a couple of miles............... and then stick it in gear!

when it gets to about 4 bars the gauge becomes erratic but petrol light seems to be consistent - comes on about 43-44 litres

The fuel gauge does some calculations based on your driving near the bottom of its range.

If that is the case, then it sounds like we should rely on that more than the gauage.

And the +04 cars have more bars in their gauages than the pre 04 cars. I do perfer the design of the +04 cars tbh. In fact the whole dash cluster is different, as they also have a clock.
