I've had the same, I always treat the fuel gauge as a 'rough guess'
On a slightly different note, does anyone have problems with the pumps cutting off too soon when filling up? At one particular Shell garage the other week I literally couldn't put any fuel in without the pump clicking off immediately, ended up having to squeeze it very gently so it dribbled out (no sniggering please...) which took ages. Finally left the garage and found I was 2 bars down from full

The S isn't so bad, but my wife's Celica is terrible for that.

From my experience of 35k miles a year, this is due to the back pressure of the fuel displacing the air in the tank. Usually new pumps or very quick pumps do it. Also pumps with two set of nozzles do it when some one the other side stops/starts using a nozzle!
Trick I use is to pull the nozzle out an inch or so to allow the air past it, seems to work!

What effect does petrol have on the paintwork?
I was gonna wash it today, but it seems like it's gonna rain any second....and has done so most of the day.

If this happens again, try turning the ignition full off and on once or twice more. That might cause the gauge to display a more helpful reading. Never had it happen to me so I can't confirm this, but there are some things in the ECU's behaviour that make be think this might do the trick.

I had something similar happen to me in Slough, it was a tesco station on the way to langley.
I put a bit in cos it was about 2 bars, I got in the car and the gauge did not move. I thought ********* I've been conned out of 10 quid. I checked the pump as I left and it was saying that it had delivered the fuel. But I wasn't sure, it was only after about 10 mins that the guage started to move, and relief that i hadn't been conned washed over me.
I always have trouble at petrol stations though, a few years ago, I pulled up in my dads old VW caravette at the local Jet station to put a bit of 4 star in it, boy did I get a bit more than I had bargained for.
Pulled the filler out of it housing on the pump put it in the filler hole on the VW, put a few quid in. So I was ready to take it out, unknown to me the jagged edge of the pump had got stuck in the VW's filler. Could I get it out, could I .
, this is silly, started twisting it, nope, come out you little people started looking at me wreastling with the filler. When I eventually got the ing thing out, I got a round of applause from everyone on the garage fourcort.
I never went back to that station ever again.
