Default Fuel economy

Just thought I'd share with you all my very dull but exceedingly cheap drive over the weekend.

I had to drive down to Wickham Skeith in Suffolk over the weekend (middle of nowhere) which is just over 202 miles away from me. I thought it would be interesting to see just how good these cars are on fuel (yerrr I know.. boring right?). So I must've sat flush on 56mph the whole way and drafted as many lorries as was humanely possible, I even resisted the invitation to race, twice!!

The result? 404 miles in total cost me 43.7 litres in fuel! or £57.80! Anyone else do better?!

And before you start giving me jip for driving like a tart, it was a one off!

I stuck those figures in an MPG calculator (because a "I did this many miles to a tank" figure means jackanory to me) and that comes out at 42 MPG! That's very impressive!

56 MPH is pretty low, and drafting lorries is pretty boring - I wonder how much it would drop if you sat at say 60-65 MPH?

Tart! Hehe 42 mpg is epic. I reckon if you were dead smooth and constant 56 mph it could be done (with some drafting as you say) I take it the hood was up?

Just cos you were bored doesn't mean you have to bore all of us too

We don't do mpg topics!

So you saved about £40 over spirited driving by my reckoning, but probably took about 3 hours longer.

So figuring an average UK income divided by a typical 40 hour work week that's breaking even.

Of course, there is a special place reserved in hell for people who drive sports cars for fuel economy.
