Im finally taking the new S for a tour of France at the end of the month with the other half, and as ive not been in the situation were higher Octane fuel is required for a car when abroad, is the likes of Optimax readily available in petrol stations over there?

Also is petrol any cheaper than over here?

No optimax but no problems finding 97 ron ( I think - may have been 98) and the car was fine. Can't remember prices though.

No Optimax but plenty of 98 RON. In fact you will see signposts that say what sort of petrol is available and how far away you are.

Have fun!

Careful if you're in the middle of nowhere, you'll have difficulty out of hours getting ANY petrol as a lot of the stations are automated and only take cards, but won't take foreign (ie UK) cards. I had a couple of close shaves... including a 48.5l fill up!!!!

In the Alps, fill up while you can. The cols take a lot of petrol and you can't trust the fuel gauge. And in Belgium, watch out because a lot of the petrol stations on the Motorway are awkard, you have to go into the shop first, do something, then come out and fill up, then go back in and pay. I think that was mostly near Brussels though. Probably because of all the politicians around there.

When I was in France in June, 98RON was typically 1.25 Euros

In germany in Shell garages you can get vmax which is better than optimax. 100RON! Although you're supposed to reset the ECU to make the most of it, but I never did.

But basically in france, if you can buy petrol you can basically buy 98RON (super plus san plomb or super sans plomb) Usually about 1.3 Euro per litre ish.
