Just taken my engine and box out of both the cars I have.

A few things I didnt know before starting:

Taking the ECU connectors out is a bugger as you have to remove the ECU, and its bolted in with round headed bolts. We gently tapped a torques socket on the heads of them which managed to get them out.

Be SUPER carefull with your knock sensor!!!! I broke mine, knowing where it was trying to get it out! Here is a photo I took to show people where it is. Its £170 from Honda to replace You normally break this removing your top starter bolt, so make sure you try to get this out before doing the starter or be SUPER careful with that 24" long extension bar!

Get the car as HIGH as possible on axel stands. It really helps.

It took me and my mate 8 hours over two evenings to get my first one out, then 5 hours in one evening to get the second one out. Its good fun and I'm pretty sure working flat out now knowing what we know we could nail it in 3.5-4 hours.

Good luck and enjoy!

thanks for the advice, I'll definitely show this to my friend who will be helping with the engine swap. One engine is lunched anyway so hopefully I wouldn't end up breaking both knock sensors!

Did you take it out from the top or underneath? I'm guessing the top as the inlet manifold is still on?

Why are the knock sensors so easy to break? I need to change my gearbox soon so this worries me. Is £170 the cheapest they can be had from anywhere?

I managed to break both of mine! One completely snapped, the other, only the plastic bit moved and snapped off. The wires inside were unharmed so I just glued the cap back on with super super super extra strength glue! They are a complete turd to get out just because its so hard to get to them! I think if I were to do it again, I might just be super careful while doing the starter bolt and try to leave the sensor in.

We took the engine out from the top mate. Split the gearbox from the engine and took it out of the bottom then pulled the engine out of the top. To be honest, it took about 3 hours removing the box and about 40 mins removing the actual engine! I've heard people say removing the intake manifold takes about the same amount of time but tends to shred your hands more, so decided to go the box route as I wanted to check my clutch anyway! I'll put some photos up in another thread if you like?

I guess its because they heat up and cool down so regularly, the plastic becomes brittle. Also more than 1/2 of the sensor is in the engine so if you give the plastic part a tap with a heavy ratchet it doesn't have much hope of not coming off You can get OEM ones for a little less from Hendy I believe (I think about £150) and you can get one from a company called Pulse8 or Daytona GB, but these are not OEM quality and a few people have reported them snapping off and getting stuck in the block! Not good! Lots of people manage to do it and say its no problem. I think I'm just super cack handed!!

Aaahhhh...the good ol' "I haven't read your thread properly because I'm an uneducated tw@t that sees the name of a part, instantly wants it, but fails to read any other information in the thread" character...

...you'll meet a fair few hopefuls who will say "I'll buy that" but when it comes to money, they shy away. These are the sort who probably live with mum and dad.

Not as bad as the yank who wanted my rear bumper though...

...He was going to pay £180 for the bumper...fair enough.

Shipping came to £500 (volumetric weight was huge)...

...He asked me to pay for the shipping! He said "I'll know you won't really be making any money, but help me out here dude"

Not only would I not be making any money, I would be £320 out of pocket and minus a bumper!

Jog the f@#k on...panyo!!!

EDIT: Go for spray paint...no offence, but Rob's engine looked much better

Well its been a bloody busy weekend but there's been a decent bit of progress!

My friend came over to help me and we made a start at about 11am on the engine itself. It didnt turn out to be an easy job as I wasn't aware that you have to drop the box down to get the bolts undone on the back of the bell housing right by bulkhead. To get around this and after having a very helpful chat with Dixon on the phone we decided to drop the subframe and get the entire thing out in one go taking it all out from under the car. We had a limited amount of tools and were doing it on axle stands which probably didn't help but we finally finished the job at about 6.20pm. The main reason for it taking so long is that it took over an hour to get one bolt out of the subframe that had a tight spot and then another 40 mins to remove the same bolt on the opposite side. Total git to get out even using air tools and big ass breaker bars!

Anyway...The car went into the paintshop from outside...

With a bit of help from my mate, he tackled disconnecting all the pipes etc whilst I removed the wing, headlights and suspension arms as these were coming off anyway.

We then got the engine hoist connected up...

...and eventually dropped the subframe!

Then the engine came out quite nicely from underneath after detatching the propshaft.

Job done!

Shame its not as easy in real life as in pictures

The exhaust and braces also came off whilst it was up in the air and then we had to also put the subframe back in to roll the car back out of the workshop ready for monday morning again.

Next is to strip it properly, finish swapping the polybushed arms onto my new one and then get the engine into it as well...oh and we broke the bloody knock sensor!
