Just so I'm straight the first oil change on an S is 9,000 mile right
and not 6,000

and also the recommendation is not to change the oil before that period right?

Neil

But that's where my confusion is coming from!

Oil

Stay mineral until 6k or first service, run in oil should be 10W30 (preferred) or 10W40 (more readily available and perfectly acceptable). Halfords do 10W40 in an orange bottle MAKE SURE YOU BUY MINERAL. Synth up (if you desire) after that. If any engine work (or early servicing) is done pre 6k, ensure additive molybednum is requested. This is a `run in` additive that assists lubrication.

why is it saying 6k then not 9k

No mistake I believe it was Tonky who wrote the oil section in the tech faq, although I may be wrong as it was a long time ago now.

Anyway, let me clarify. The oil must be kept mineral until 6k. The reason that this was put in the faq is that quite a number of owners don't reach 9k within the first year so they get the car serviced at 12 months with a lower mileage. The important bit is that your crap Honda dealer realises that pre 6k the car should still be on mineral and must have the additive molybednum included in the oil change.

Apologies, but just to clarify ......
First service is at 9000 or 12 months, whichever comes first, at which point mineral oil should be changed for synthetic..... UNLESS..... you happen to have done less than 6000 in the first year (somewhat unlikely anyway I would have thought), in which case synthetic must be retained along with the additive.
If the first service comes between 6000 and 9000, then the mineral can be swapped for the synthetic.
Have I got it finally?

Also, is it actually ok to nail your S (after say 800 miles running-in), whilst still using mineral?
Are there no possible harmful effects on the engine, or is it preferable to limit revving out to 8-9k until synthetic is being used?
I guess it's all about being fairly sensible for the first year (Did I really say that??)

well, on my 04 s2000 manual, it states 7500 miles or every 1yr whichever comes first under normal driving condition. in severe driving condition, 3750 miles or 6 mos whichever come first.
