Default First engine wash!

So today i did my first ever engine wash! I was pretty skeptical about spraying water all over the engine but i did a lot of searching first and the general consensus was it was pretty safe to do, the extra precautions i took were just putting a plastic bag over the Battery and Air Box.

The rest is pretty standard:
  • Lightly sprayed engine bay with water (very nervously)
  • Covered everything in Autogylm Engine Degreaser
  • Scrubbed with a standard kitchen sponge, and a tooth brush for the hard to reach places
  • Rinsed engine degreaser off with water
  • FInally dried everything off with a microfibre cloth

Im sure some of the pro's here do a much better job, but i was quite pleased with the results. Some of the rocker cover paint flaked off which is a little bit annoying.

Anyway, the pictures:

Nice job -You just need a good squirt of the Autoglym tyre dressing now and it'll add the finishing touch to the plastics

You've missed a bit.

Get some sandpaper on the relief embossed 'HONDA VTEC' coilpack cover and you're good to go... Speaking of which, have you done any driving yet?!

Good job though.

Another good idea, i did wonder how people get that so clean!

Ive actually put 300miles on the clock since i picked it up last wednesday, you wouldn't believe it though with the amount of silly paranoid questions ive been posting on here

Not sure if you covered the alternator? I've always covered it when I detail my engine.

Take the airbox lid off for a blast up the road and back!

And then start saving for an induction kit that you will inevitably want to buy once you've heard what noise that engine can make! ;-)

i like to see people taking the time to clean the engine bay You can buy Engine dresser just sprays on backs hoses etc back to black. Am planning on doing mine this weekend, i use autosmart G101 for the degrease stage.

I didnt cover the alternator, i read somewhere that they are fairly waterproof? Either way i avoided it as much as i could, it never took a direct spray.

Taking the airbox off made a nice difference, much deeper sound for sure

Never bothered covering any part of mine when I clean engines! Soak it in meguiars super degreaser then get the little brushes out, scrub everything off and rinse! Got a compresser and blower at home so use that to blow all the water out. If you have some autosol the air con hard pipes come up a treat. As for the metal parts of the block etc, use a bit of grey scotch brite and super degreaser/all purpose cleaner and scrub them up, they look like new then!
