Factually on a subjective level, it is totally true. But how can facts be subjective?

Here are the facts. They softened things.

The MY99 S was the S as originally designed. The next major change was 02. So 99-01 stayed as is.

But in reality, all these cars are great. 99-08. Super motor. My best advice would be to get the best you can afford, by that I mean not the latest but the best. I am a believer in new is not best in the car game.

I would get a well cared/serviced/garaged example over a less cherished newer one.

I them whichever you get. They are facking great.

Apologies Neil,

I'd read about the changes to the tax bands but hadn't realised the 2006 breakpoint had been removed. Looks like we've been subjected to another con trick by our sh*te politicians.

Suppose we have to pay for their houses some way.

I'm really beginning to hate this country, and all the so called do gooders and political correctness. Is someone going to tell China and India to back off their emissions, no chance while we are investing in their power stations.

Rant over. Need to go to the lakes for a blast tomorrow.

IME there is a not insignificant difference between the handling of the 02 and 04-05.

Whether one is better than the other I wouldn't like to say - it depends on what you would be using the car for.

Each is a compromise in one direction or other.

I wouldn't worry about it though - buy on condition at the price you want to pay.

My advice is buy the best car you can for the best price you can with the money at your disposal. And get used to the suspension that comes with it.

The mods will cost quite a bit not just for parts and labour, but in insurance as well. Plus when you sell the car, the mods will detract a lot of newbie buyers and mods generally never recoup the investment when the car is sold on. I guess it depends on how long you intend to own the car as well as how badly you want the setup you have in mind. For me, other criteria were more important than suspension in choosing the S.

err.. is that a good thing?
wouldn't you want it to be substantially distinguishable from stock after having spent loads of money on it?
(or do you mean in terms of ride quality alone?)
I mean it is indistuinguishable from stock in performance terms. As much as I've spent on it, I'd say every mod I've made has been excellent value for money - I'm no expert, so asked one or two instead and the best handling characteristics of the S have been accentuated as a result. Ride quality isn't an issue since I can adjust the dampers according to road surface - although I just leave it hardish most of the time given I don't use the car daily.

I can't comment on much else you've asked, I've only had mine a year/15,000 miles and only driven that example.

Of course it would be far more environmentally friendly for all owners of high polluting cars only from the dates 2001-2008 to scrap their perfectly good cars and buy a Prius - where of course the production and disposal of all those hybrid batteries is perfect for the environment
